Losing your phone data is devastating, and entirely preventable. Whether you are switching to a new device, dealing with a reset, or just being cautious, backing up your Android phone takes less than ten minutes and protects everything.
Here is how to do it properly.
What Needs to Be Backed Up
Most people assume their phone handles backups automatically. It does — but only partially. Google backs up your contacts, calendar, app list, and some app data by default. It does not back up every app's internal data, your SMS messages by default, or your local photos unless you turn that on separately.
Think in four categories: contacts and calendar, photos and videos, messages, and app data.
Backing Up Contacts and Calendar
If you use a Google account, your contacts and calendar sync automatically. Go to Settings > Accounts > Google and check that Contacts and Calendar syncing is toggled on.
To verify: open contacts.google.com in a browser. If your contacts are there, the sync is working.
Backing Up Photos and Videos
Open Google Photos. Go to your profile picture > Photos settings > Backup. Toggle backup on. Set the upload quality to "Storage saver" unless you have plenty of Google storage.
Wait for the backup to complete — you can see the progress at the top of the Library tab. When you see "Backup is on" with no pending uploads, your photos are safe.
If you have lots of photos and limited Google storage, consider Samsung Cloud (if you use a Samsung), or connect your phone to a PC and copy your camera folder manually.
Backing Up SMS Messages
Google's default backup does not cover all SMS. Download SMS Backup and Restore from the Play Store. Open it, tap Back Up Now, and choose where to store the file — your phone's storage or Google Drive. This creates a single XML file containing all your messages.
Backing Up App Data
Go to Settings > System > Backup (exact path varies by manufacturer). Turn on "Back up to Google Drive." This backs up app settings, Wi-Fi passwords, and some app data to your Google account.
Not every app participates in this backup system. Apps like WhatsApp have their own backup system — go to WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat Backup and back up to Google Drive.
Before Switching Phones
Before you set up a new Android device, do the following in order:
- Back up photos via Google Photos — wait for it to complete
- Run a full Google backup from Settings > System > Backup
- Back up WhatsApp to Google Drive from within the app
- Export SMS using SMS Backup and Restore
- Write down or export any two-factor authentication codes
When you set up the new phone with your Google account, everything will restore automatically during setup.
A backup you never test is a backup you cannot trust. Every few months, open Google Photos on a browser and confirm your recent photos are there.
